THE NOTATION DESK / CLEAR WORKING

FAQs

Detailed answers about input formats, exactness, rounding, notation and browser-only privacy.

Are all six tools free without an account?

Yes. Results, visible working, text downloads and browser printing are available without sign-up, subscription or payment details. Your own device, connection and printer costs remain separate. There is no checkout or tutoring booking.

Which number formats are accepted?

Numeric text fields accept a signed decimal such as −0.00450 (type a normal keyboard minus), a leading-dot decimal such as .25, and e notation such as 6.02e23. Use a period as decimal separator. Do not enter grouping commas, units, fractions, ×10 expressions or code.

What are the input and work limits?

A numeric coefficient may contain up to 300 written digits within a 420-character field, with an e exponent from −1000 to 1000. Separate power fields also use −1000 to 1000. Integer exponentiation has a 6000-digit work estimate and expanded decimals a 6500-place limit. Precision choices range from 1 to 30 figures. These are implementation limits, not mathematical laws.

Are the answers exact?

Finite decimal inputs are treated as exact rational values. Terminating results are shown exactly. Repeating results retain an exact reduced fraction but use a labelled rounded scientific display. A physically measured input may still be uncertain or already rounded, and no tool infers that uncertainty.

Which rounding rule is used?

Half away from zero. A tie such as 1.25 to two significant figures becomes 1.3; −1.25 becomes −1.3. This differs from half-to-even. The significant-figure tool explicitly formats a requested count; the arithmetic and power tools round only repeating displays.

Does the arithmetic tool apply measured significant figures?

No. It computes with the exact numeric values entered. The repeating-display precision is not an automatic laboratory reporting rule. Use your course or discipline’s requirements and inspect the separate significant-figure explanation.

Why can 1200 have different significant-figure counts?

Without context, trailing integer zeros can be ambiguous. The counter treats plain 1200 as two figures, 1200. as four and 1.200e3 as four. That convention is visible in the result. All-zero inputs use a stated decimal-place convention, not a universal metrology rule.

What happens with division by zero or 0^0?

Division by zero and zero raised to a negative power are rejected. The exponent tool also leaves 0^0 undefined instead of choosing a convention. No Infinity or NaN is presented as a worked numeric answer.

Why does a negative base need parentheses?

This tool always treats the entire signed base as parenthesized. Entering −2 with exponent 2 means (−2)^2 = 4. A textbook expression −2^2 usually means −(2^2) = −4; the forms are not interchangeable.

How do scientific and engineering notation differ?

For nonzero values, scientific notation has coefficient magnitude in [1,10); engineering notation uses [1,1000) and a power divisible by three. Both represent the same value. Zero uses the displayed convention 0 × 10^0.

Are metric prefixes decimal or binary?

The converter uses exact decimal SI powers, including quetta, ronna, ronto and quecto. It does not convert Ki/Mi binary prefixes, change dimensions, handle squared or cubed units, or apply temperature offsets. Prefix case matters; the selectors show full names and symbols.

Does the site store my numbers or notes?

The delivered calculators keep working values only in the current page and do not transmit them to a calculation endpoint or write them to cookies, localStorage or sessionStorage. Browser autofill, restored tabs, extensions, downloads and hosting request logs can act independently. Do not enter private records.

How do I print, save PDF or share the working?

Build a valid result, then choose Download text or Print / Save PDF. The text includes working, entered values and method. Browser printing uses a result-focused layout; choose a PDF destination if supported. These are local copies controlled by your device, not an online share link or server archive.

Why are blank optional fields absent?

A blank study note is omitted from the output and input summary. A nonblank note is displayed literally, not interpreted as HTML, and does not change the calculation. Editing any input clears the previous answer so old working is not mistaken for a new result.

Can these tools replace a teacher or validate professional work?

No. The working is study support, not a substitute for a teacher, textbook, uncertainty analysis or professional verification. Check notation and rounding conventions, especially for assignments and safety-critical calculations. Report reproducible issues through Contact.
