THE NOTATION DESK / 01 · CONVERSIONS

Scientific Notation Converter

Convert finite decimal values in either direction. See the coefficient, decimal shift and expanded number without binary floating-point rounding.

Free · No sign-up · Instant, browser-only results

Set out your numbers

Use numbers and non-identifying study notes only. No names, account data or private records are needed.

Decimal or e notation, e.g. -0.00450 or 4.50e-3. No commas, fractions, units or expressions. Up to 300 coefficient digits; e exponent −1000 to 1000.
Optional; maximum 180 characters. Displayed literally and excluded from the arithmetic.

No calculation API or saved history. Inputs stay in the current working page.

THE NOTATION DESK / YOUR WORKING NOTE

The working belongs beside the answer.

Enter your values, then show the result and its steps here. Download and print controls appear after a valid calculation.

Study support, not a substitute for a teacher or textbook. Check input conventions, exactness and any labelled rounding before using or sharing an answer.

Behind the result - No mystery in the method

The parser separates sign, written decimal digits and any e exponent. The first nonzero digit defines a normalized coefficient with magnitude at least 1 and less than 10. The exact decimal shift supplies the integer power of ten. In the reverse direction, the same value is expanded by shifting the decimal point and inserting zeros. Zero is displayed as 0 × 10^0 by convention. The number is kept as a reduced fraction of BigInt integers, not parsed as a binary floating-point number. This is value conversion: original trailing zeros are not retained as a measurement claim.

This tool does not store inputs, fetch live data or replace a teacher or textbook explanation. Blank optional fields are omitted. Text is displayed literally, not interpreted as HTML.

Changing an input clears the old answer so it cannot be mistaken for the new calculation. Download text makes a local copy of the current working. Print / Save PDF uses the browser’s print controls. Review any note before sharing.

Before you go

Is the conversion exact?

Yes, for accepted finite decimal inputs within the displayed limits. Entered digits are treated as exact numeric values. If the original number was a rounded measurement, conversion cannot recover omitted digits or establish its physical accuracy.

How do I type a negative exponent?

Use e notation such as 6.02e-7, or enter the standard decimal directly. Do not type ×10, caret expressions, commas or units in the numeric field. A leading minus sign belongs to the value, not automatically to its exponent.

Why are my trailing zeros removed?

This tool converts the numeric value and normalizes the display. Use the Significant Figures tool when written zeros carry precision information. For zero, 0 × 10^0 is a convention, not a unique normalized form.

Can I print the steps without saving numbers here?

Yes. Build a result, then Download text or Print / Save PDF. The tools do not store inputs; the copies you choose to create are controlled by your browser and device.
